Timing –When to Ask Your Audience for Testimonials
I am always amazed at the number of speakers who wait to the end of their speech before asking their audience to give them a testimonial (if they ask at all.)
What is happening at the end of your speech? People are gathering up their papers, putting on their jackets, thinking about their flight or drive home, talking to other people etc. What they are NOT doing is listening to you ask them for a testimonial and what they will NOT do is take time at the end of your speech to give you one.
You have to ask for the testimonial in advance of the end of your speech if you expect to get any.
When do you ask? Far enough into your speech where you have established enough VALUE and CREDIBILITY, but not so close to the end of the speech that your audience is distracted.
That’s about 75% of the way into your speech or at least 15 minutes before the end.
