Ask for Them! Strange as it seems, many people are afraid to ask for referrals or consider asking unprofessional. It would be unprofessional NOT to want to share your benefits with others. They only thing I am afraid of is that I’ll forget to ask for a referral when I should ask.
Communicate your willingness to compensate for referrals that result in business. Give examples of compensation you’ve given in the past.
Give your compensation generously. Little gifts gets little attention; big gifts pay handsomely in the future.
Pay compensation promptly! Gifts have diminishing value the longer it takes between earning and getting the reward.
Follow-up on EVERY referral, no matter what the outcome:
thank the person at the time of referral with a phone call, or better yet, a thank you note keep the person giving the referral apprised of your follow-up and activity along the way
let them know the outcome no matter what it is. My biggest pet peeve is that I’ll make a referral and NEVER hear anything from that person. Result: I tend to quit giving that person referrals and the same thing will happen to you.
