If Not Books, What?
Wait, I don’t suggest you never write a book. If you have a “book in your head” that you think will become a national bookstore book, write it. But here’s the problem—most of us don’t have that kind of book in us. Most of us have information of value for small but eager audiences. Most of us do not have national best sellers. If you’ve looked recently, most of the books on the New York Times best selling list aren’t even non-fiction books.
For those of you have that national bookstore in your head, what’s it doing in there? How long will it stay there? When will you get it out of your head and onto the bookshelf?
I know many speakers who say they want to write a published book for marketplace credibility and I’ll grant you that a successful book can make you credible. But what are you living on while you chase that elusive goal? What good is credibility doing you while your dream stays bottled up in your head?
I’d really like to think that I will be a famous author some day, but I am realistic about the kinds of things I write about and the size of the marketplace willing to buy those things. But I sold over $75,000 in educational materials last year—more revenue than earned by 98% of all bookstore authors…and I did that with fewer than 20 speeches!
Most of us will not become famous authors plugging our books on Oprah or signing for thousands lined up around the block at Barnes and Noble. Most of us will never crack the top ten at Amazon.com. You are NOT helping people if your wisdom, experience and ideas stay bottled up inside your head.
Why Not Books
They don’t really want Your books
You can’t get a fair exchange for your information in a book
Your audience doesn’t want another book they won’t read
Books are read once (maybe) and never again
